Hydrodermabrasion vs Microdermabrasion: The Battle of the Micro and Hydrodermabrasion Machines

dermabrasion vs microdermabrasion

Here we have a tale of two facials…

Let's face it, we all have something that we would like to change or improve on the skin on our face as it is the most visible part of all of our bodies. Whether your issue is with fine lines, blackheads, or even just sun damaged skin, we tend to try as many different solutions as possible to improve our skin care.

I myself am no different, and short of going for plastic surgery, I have tried and experimented with as many different types of skin treatment as you can think of. Below is my story of discovering hydrodermabrasion facials and how they quickly became my go-to at home treatment for glowing skin.

But first lets take a look at what hydrodermabrasion vs microdermabrasion really are, and how they stack up against each other.

Hydrodermabrasion vs Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion and Hydro dermabrasion are becoming two of the most popular non-invasive treatments both at spa and at home for various reasons. Both procedures are great at exfoliating and at cleaning pores with minimum redness and healing time even for sensitive skin. So which procedure will benefit you the most while keeping in mind your skin type and your skin concerns?

Let's start with microdermabrasion. It is a quick, painless procedure that uses a diamond tip head made of fine crystals and vacuum suction to remove dead skin cells and clean your pores. This procedure is performed on dry skin by "sanding down" the top layer of your skin and thus stimulating collagen production. I was sold on the idea of revealing a beautiful and glowing skin tone even after one treatment. This was my very first home device that I ever purchased!

Before we jump into what my story with microdermabrasion was like, lets do a quick summary of the pros and cons of the treatment:

Microdermabrasion

Pros:

  1. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.

  2. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require much downtime.

  3. Microdermabrasion can be performed on a variety of skin types and tones.

  4. The procedure can be done quickly, making it a convenient option for busy individuals.

  5. The results of microdermabrasion are typically immediately visible with improved skin texture.

    Cons:

    1. Microdermabrasion may not be effective for deeper wrinkles or scars.

    2. The procedure can be painful for some people.

    3. The effects of microdermabrasion are temporary and multiple treatments may be needed to maintain the desired results.

    4. Microdermabrasion can cause redness and swelling of the skin, which may take several hours to several days to resolve.

    5. The procedure can be expensive, and may not be covered by insurance.

After doing some research and watching a bunch of YouTube videos, I decided to get a popular brand microdermabrasion device. It was about $300 back then, so I had to convince my husband that it will not be sitting on our shelf collecting dust. I don't think he believed me but I got it anyway. I was using it once in 1-2 weeks and saw an improvement with every singe treatment. I would take a hot shower to help open up my pores if I was planning on removing blackheads. This device did a great  job with that.

      Effect on Dead Skin Cells

The diamond tip would scrape the dead cells making my skin smoother and softer while lightening up my dark spots. The only downside that I noticed is that it made my skin a little bit more sensitive. I think I was just overdoing it in certain areas by scraping too much. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing it while you are doing it and it became a problem for me during winter time when my skin was dryer than usual. This is when I first heard about hydro dermabrasion.

Hydro dermabrasion uses a silicone tip with vacuum water suction. It's similar to microdermabrasion but it's the power of water and a gentle silicone tip that pulls dirt, oil and dead skin cells out.

      Skin Health

Let's face it, beauty isnt the sole reason why we would use a microdermabrasion treatment, most of us care equally about any skin concerns we may have with regards to it's health.

The great news is hydrodermabrasion treatment not only makes you appear more youthful with a powerful anti aging effect that has a huge effect on any fine lines you may have, but it equally benefits your overall skin health by alleviating any skin conditions you may be dealing with.

The reason is that the gentler hydrodermabrasion procedure gently lifts away the top layer of the skin that holds all the dead cells. This creates a deep cleansing effect much like you would get from any of the chemical peels offered in the market but without the prolonged redness that comes along with those.

      How Hydrodermabrasion Facials Work

      1. First, the skin is cleansed to remove any makeup or impurities.

      2. The hydrodermabrasion device is then used to spray the exfoliating solution onto the skin. The solution is typically made up of fine crystals such as aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate.

      3. The suction component of the device is then used to remove the exfoliated skin cells and crystals from the skin's surface. This process helps to stimulate circulation and encourage the production of new skin cells.

      4. The treatment may also include the application of a serum or moisturizer to help nourish and hydrate the skin.

      5. After the treatment, the skin may be red and slightly swollen, but these side effects should resolve within a few hours. It's important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by the skin care professional to help the skin heal and to minimize the risk of any complications.

      Impressions with sensitive skin

After trying this type of device I was blown away with the results! The treatment is way more comfortable even in winter without irritating my skin. The fact that I could see all the junk coming out of my skin in the waste water container was so rewarding! I feel like I can get more consistent treatments done without overdoing it which is why now I primarily just do hydrodermabrasion at home as my treatment of choice. Take a look at exactly what it looks like when I use it:

      Benefits of a hydrodermabrasion facial:

      1. A hydrodermabrasion vacuum is gentler on the skin: The use of water in hydro microderm helps to gently exfoliate the skin, making it less abrasive than microdermabrasion. This can be especially beneficial for people with sensitive skin or those who are more prone to irritation.

      2. Hydrodermabrasion facials can be less painful: Some people find hydrodermabrasion to be less painful than microdermabrasion, as the water helps to reduce friction and discomfort.

      3. Hydrodermabrasion vacuums can be more effective: The addition of water in hydrodermabrasion can help to soften and loosen dead skin cells, making it easier to exfoliate the skin and potentially resulting in more effective treatment.

      4. Hydrodermabrasion can be more hydrating: The use of water in hydrodermabrasion can help to hydrate the skin, which can be especially beneficial for people with dry or dehydrated skin.
